Chapter 15 – A Fair Loss in the Game of Fate

"I understand." Li You's expression calmed as he fixed his gaze on Bai Ye, speaking earnestly, "Go ahead and do what you need to. Though I'm not a good person, I respect your character and am willing to follow your wishes.

Once you deal with the Hyena Pack, we can work together against Wang She and the others.

However... I can't guarantee you'll still be alive by then. If you encounter danger, I can only say that I'll help where I can, but I won't risk my life to save you, because my mother is still waiting for me to return, and I can't put myself in harm's way."

"No matter, my mind is made up." Bai Ye stood with his hands behind his back, the cold moonlight casting a silver edge on him.

Li You was moved, "Wheel of Fate... I lost fair and square. Take care!"

"Don't see me off."

The sound of rustling leaves filled the air as Li You disappeared into the woods without looking back.

Under the bright moon, Bai Ye touched his chin, a thoughtful expression on his face, "Is it really okay for me to deceive a disabled person like this?"

"Actually, it's not really deception. A gentleman judges by actions, not intentions."

The reason he disagreed with Li You's plan wasn't for Graysoil Town, but because he wanted to kill more hyenas under the protection of Wang She and Tan Jie to enhance his own strength.

Sure, he could follow Li You's plan to kill Wang She and Tan Jie from the inside, but what then?

Who would protect him while he hunted hyenas? Could Li You, who was only half-capable, really protect him? At that point, he might have to waste time using Time Stop to kill all the hyenas.

Instead, it was better to continue using Wang She, Tan Jie, and their subordinates.

In the previous battle, they had led everyone to protect him in the center, allowing him to shoot with ease. How considerate.

But Li You's appearance was an unexpected delight. When the moment of truth came, facing Wang She and the others alone, relying solely on the Breath of Bones wouldn't be enough. He would definitely need to use Time Stop, but with Li You, perhaps he could save some time.

Thinking of this, Bai Ye couldn't help but laugh, "I really am a master of time management!"

......

The next day.

Bai Ye woke up around noon. Today was supposed to be the day to go out and hunt hyenas, but Old Tan insisted on delaying it by a day, citing concerns about Bai Ye's health. With nothing entertaining in Graysoil Town, he could only sleep.

After lunch, feeling bored, he yawned as he walked down the streets of Graysoil Town. To call them streets was generous; they were dirt paths formed by frequent foot traffic.

On either side were low houses, and quite a few people were sleeping right by the roadside.

It was summer, and people chose to sleep outside to stay cool.

"Deputy Commander Bai." Dusty-faced passersby greeted Bai Ye with respect.

Graysoil Town wasn't large, and Bai Ye's exploits from the previous day had already spread, earning him a measure of respect.

He walked with an air of indifference, basking in the attention of the crowd.

The rebellious and carefree look on the young man's face stood out like a splash of color in a black-and-white photo compared to the numb expressions around him.

Though he was bored, the fact that his time had increased by another minute lifted his spirits.

Four minutes and forty seconds! Yesterday, Li You had wasted ten seconds.

Suddenly!

Panicked voices came from afar.

"Not good! The Hyena Pack is attacking the town!"

"The Mutant Beasts are attacking the town!"

Bai Ye focused his gaze and saw several raggedly dressed residents running in panic from the direction of the town gate.

He grabbed one of them, his eyes filled with joy as he asked, "What's going on?"

The person, still shaken, kept glancing back, his face pale, "Mutant Beasts... they've gone mad, they're attacking the town!"

Bai Ye's eyes lit up with even more joy. Attacking the town?

He had been worried about not being able to hunt Mutant Beasts today, but now they were attacking directly, making it even more convenient. He wouldn't even have to leave the town to lure them out; he could shoot them from the safety of the walls.

However, amidst his excitement, he felt a slight confusion. Why would the Mutant Beasts suddenly attack the town?

At this moment, Tan Jie, the Leader of the East District, also rushed out with his men upon hearing the commotion.

"Everyone, follow me to the gate!" Tan Jie shouted to his subordinates, and upon spotting Bai Ye, he quickly said, "Deputy Commander Bai, let's hurry over."

Bai Ye pulled out the Breath of Bones, unable to contain his excitement, and followed them.

When they reached the walls, they indeed saw nearly a hundred hyenas charging towards Graysoil Town under the leadership of the Hyena King.

"What on earth is happening? Why have the hyenas suddenly gone berserk?" Tan Jie asked uneasily.

His greatest fear was the hyenas launching a direct assault on Graysoil Town. The town gate, though seemingly sturdy, couldn't withstand the onslaught of nearly a hundred hyenas. If the hyenas disregarded their own casualties, they could eventually break through.

Previously, they hadn't launched a full assault mainly because the hyenas were wary of the number of people in Graysoil Town, which was eight times that of the hyenas.

Mutated hyenas were intelligent, but not on par with humans. They thought humans, like beasts, would fight back desperately when faced with a life-and-death crisis, not realizing that most people would just stand there waiting to die.

"I don't know either. They just suddenly started appearing one after another!" a panicked guard said.

"Don't panic. Their attack might not be a bad thing," Wang She's cold voice came from a distance as he ascended the wall surrounded by his followers.

"With the protection of the walls, we can shoot from above. As long as Deputy Commander Bai's health holds, even if the gate is breached, they'll suffer heavy losses."

"I'm just afraid he won't hold up!" Tan Jie looked at Bai Ye with concern, as if the two were close friends.

"Hmph." Bai Ye snorted coldly, his rebellious gaze sweeping over them, "If you can't speak properly, then shut your mouth. Even if you die, I won't!"

Because his time had increased by another minute, he couldn't even be bothered to call Tan Jie by his nickname anymore.

Tan Jie's face darkened. Perhaps it was just his imagination, but he felt that with each passing day, Bai Ye's disrespect for him grew. However, he knew now wasn't the time to confront Bai Ye. After all, without Bai Ye, who would deal with the Hyena King?

Frustrated, he vented his anger on his subordinates, "What are you all standing around for? These beasts have come knocking on our door, do I have to teach you what to do? Raise your guns, and when they get close, shoot them hard!"

Everyone hurried to find their positions, setting up their guns, waiting for the hyenas to approach.

Bai Ye's eyes flickered with excitement as he found a spot in the center, raising the Breath of Bones, waiting for the hyenas to come.

Closer! Closer!

He could even see the Hyena King's true form with the naked eye. Last time, the distance was too great, and with the sandstorm, he had only seen a vague shadow over two meters tall.

The Hyena King was covered in dark purple skin, so thin it was almost translucent. Dense, crimson blood vessels twisted and writhed as it ran, and a fist-sized dark purple tumor grew atop its head, making it look terrifyingly grotesque.

Bai Ye didn't rush to fire. A regular handgun had an effective range of only 50 meters. Although the Breath of Bones had a longer range, up to 200 meters, it lacked accuracy. With his current marksmanship, he couldn't hit anything beyond 20 meters without becoming a human outline artist.

So he waited for the others to fire first, injuring the hyenas and slowing their charge before he would finish them off.
